This question is being asked for a friend of mine who isn’t too savvy with the internet.
He lives in Illinois and wants to establish paternity of his presumed unborn child. The mother lives in Illinois also. They broke up before she informed my buddy that he had a child on the way. After she contacted him to tell him that she was pregnant she bailed and hid once she found out that he was with someone else and did not want to have a romantic relationship with her again. He told her that despite his desire to not be with her again romantically, he wanted to take full responsibility of fathering the child but that wasn’t good enough for her.
She is due to give birth in approximately 3 weeks from now and my buddy wants to register with the putative fathers registry and has just become aware that he would have only 30 days beyond the child’s birth date to file or else he could lose any rights as a father.
Question: The mother was a pretty heavy smoker and was still smoking into her 4th month of pregnancy. Given that smoker babies are sometimes born premature, it is possible that the baby has already been born. Is there a way that my friend can find out of this woman has had the child yet by using her personal information via public records or something? He will be registering regardless but just wants to know if in the meantime he can find out whether his child has been born.
Thanks for answering…
Many newspapers list new bitrths so may check newspaper information. Could call a hospital and tell them situation and see how he could find out if the child were born. Or the dept of birth registry. Each area keeps those separate but can callt he court to see where the office is and call there to see how can find out about whether the childwas born and to get papers to sign.
However, you realize that the child could not be yoru friends. If she is with another guy, it coudl be his child. So your friend should go to court to get a paternity test to prove paternity as he will be paying for this child in child support every month for 18 years. That is waht responsibility is for a father. taht would likely be a few hundered dollars a month and for a long time. Should not sign anything until he gets a court ordered paternity test. I would suggest getting an attorney. Likely to go to court to work out support amount.

Why is it always "A friend"? Anyway birth announcements are public record and you could find some them in the newspapers in most major cities since you would have the mother’s name. If the father thinks they will get custody though they are sorely mistaken. They may get joint custody, but that’s the best case. Then again if she went in hiding what’s to say she didn’t leave the State to have the child?
